Greenfield Half Termly Newsletter April 2009

Hello Everyone
Summer Term already!
We hope that you had a fantastic Easter Break. Hasn’t the weather been absolutely gorgeous? This is always an enjoyable part of the school year as we anticipate more outdoor activities whilst taking advantage of sunnier conditions(!). It is also the SATs season where our pupils will be working hard to achieve their potential.

Many of our pupils will have the opportunity to be involved with the various activities offered in the Summer Term - Sports Day, School Council Talent show, Road Safety Training, Learning to Live Day, Leaver’s Performances, analysis of test results, report writing, trips which all lead us into an exhausting but exhilarating time of the year ……………..

We would like to give a warm welcome to Miss Chamberlain who is joining the team this term. She is teaching Reception Class covering Mrs Smith’s maternity leave.
Wanted
Can you help with our parking situation?

We have tried a number of solutions to the parking problem as yet to find a suitable solution for all concerned. Parents are encouraged to park on the Moorleigh Nursing Home car park rather than Leeds Road.

We are looking for volunteers for a ‘walking bus’ from the Moorleigh nursing home to school each morning and back each evening. This will enable parents to ‘drop off’ children in the safety of the car park rather than on Leeds Road and have them supervised to the school grounds.
We would also like to remind parents to be courteous and respectful of our neighbours.

Should you be able to offer any help please contact either Miss Beresford or Mrs Pritchard.

Training will be provided and An enhanced CRB check will be required (school will organise these).

SCHOOL GROUNDS
We would like to remind parents that for the Health & Safety of all our children dogs are not permitted on the school grounds. We have recently had to clean up after dogs fouling our school playing areas. Not only is this a nuisance but it is hazardous to children’s health. Please support us by not bringing your pet onto the school grounds and being responsible should your pet soil the area.
We are having a small minority of children coming onto the grounds at night and climbing the roof. Not only is this costing the school a fortune in damage and repair but also places these people in the position of danger and injury. The roof is now painted with anti crime paint and so the perpetrators will be easily recognised as this paint cannot be removed. We remind parents that to ensure the safety of our pupils, staff and parents that the school grounds are not to be used in the evenings or during the weekends. It has been brought to our attention that some of our ex- pupils are also using the grounds as a meeting place. The school is willing to prosecute/ASBO persistent offenders for trespass as too much of our time is spent clearing broken glass, litter and repairing vandalism. If you can support our school by phoning the police if you notice people on the premises, the pupils, staff and governors would greatly appreciate this.
YR 6 RESIDENTIAL
We had a great time at RobinWood Activity Centre. Our activities included abseiling, kayaking, archery, bouldering, piranha pool, climbing….we were exhausted by the time we came back but we had a fantastic residential. Miss B visited the Year 6’s during their stay and thoroughly enjoyed Hoax Hill and the Piranha Pool. All the children were wonderful ambassadors of our school and showed real high expectations of themselves and team spirit! A memento CD of photographs will be given to each child to remind them of the occasion.

We are already planning next years residential, which is planned to take place in November 09 for Year 6’s in the next academic year. This will enable us to provide best value and give pupils a chance to bond and create lasting team spirit to take them through to high school.
SATs WEEK
SATs week for all Keystage 2 pupils takes place from Monday 11th May—Friday 15th May 2009. Please ensure your child has a water bottle. If your child is ill during SAT’s week please ring school as soon as possible.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Our school development plan usually runs from April to March each year in line with the financial year. We are going to extend the current school development plan until the end of this academic year. We will continue to prioritise:
Ø Further development of BIG writing which is really beginning to impact on pupil’s learning
Ø Developing more practical approaches to mathematics
Ø Developing our outdoor/active learning to enhance all areas of the Curriculum despite our unpredictable weather
Ø Develop our teaching and learning of science, design technology and art so that we can make the most of our new purpose built ‘Discovery Studio’
We will also be addressing the 3 areas for improvement outlined by OFSTED in their recent visit.
1. Use data about pupils’ attainment to ensure that work is well matched to the needs of all learners, especially the most able.
2. Improve the quality of marking and feedback to pupils so that they know how to improve their work.
3. Improve the quality of monitoring and evaluation so that the school can clearly measure the impact on standards of any innovations it makes.
The new school Development Plan will run September 2009 to July 2010.

SCHOOL COUNCIL TALENT SHOW
The school talent show will take place on Thursday 21st May so that the children can showcase their talents individually or as a group. Entry forms are available from Miss Pointon. Our thanks to our school council for helping to organise this event.
BRIGSHAW FEDERATION OF SCHOOLS.
We are now formally part of the Brigshaw Federation which has oversight for extended services and the Children’s Centre. We are already seeing benefits to our community with the Wednesday morning Baby Clinic, Thursday afternoon child minders meetings and Kidscope sessions. Look out for more information of events and services in school with the team of Family outreach workers based at Kippax North.

KIDSCOPE
Some of our parents/carers are accessing the facilities and support of Kidscope and finding this a very useful support mechanism. Here are the dates and venues until the end of Summer Term. Remember, that you can drop in at any venues or contact Mrs Pritchard to make an appointment.

ATTENDANCE
The winners for last half term were Class 2 with 95.6% with Class 1 second 94.9%
Congratulations to the 87 pupils achieving 100% attendance for this half term.

ATTENDANCE & HOLIDAYS — IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The Attendance Strategy Team visits our school half termly to monitor
attendance in school. Following new legislation, if your child has an
attendance rate of 85% or below, it is the legal obligation of the Welfare
Service to contact parents. The school is also required to inform the
Education Welfare Service about children who are consistently late for school. The school will not give permission for holidays for any child whose attendance is under 90% and certainly no permission will be granted for holidays during SATs week or in September as the children are still settling into the new school year and being assessed.

EAGER TO COME TO SCHOOL
May we respectfully remind pupils and parents that children should not be on the school site before 8:40 a.m. We are concerned about stranger danger and accidents occurring if children are on the premises before this time. School would be unaware of the presence of pupils before 8:40 a.m.

FROGS
If you have any spare time and a knack for organisation and fun, then come and join our gang of fund raisers. All help gratefully received your inspirational ideas we need. as little or much commitment as you can. WE NEED NEW RECRUITS URGENTLY. The next meeting has yet to be arranged but see Mrs. Pritchard in the office if you are unable to make meetings but would like to help out.

TRIPS
As this is generally the season for educational visits, may we respectfully
remind parents that we can no longer accept verbal consent for pupils planning to go on any school trip. The class teacher must receive written consent otherwise your child will be unable to attend.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
If, during the summer term we have hot, sunny days, parents are welcome to provide suntan cream for their child/ren. The children will be able to apply the cream before playtime and lunchtime. Please CLEARLY LABEL any tubes or bottles sent in. If the children wear hats please make sure that they are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

UNIFORM
We have some items of uniform available for purchase from school alternatively you can purchase online at www.schooltrends.co.uk. Waterproof trousers and jackets amazing value priced at £8.50. It is never too early to order uniform for September beat the rush!

WATERPROOFS
Waterproofs are provided by school but are also available to purchase from the school office or online, for outside activities at a cost £8.50 . This enables the children to learn all curriculum subjects in our great outdoor facilities throughout the year and in most types of weather(!) Obviously they will not be outside during floods—

It is even more important that they have a change of shoes available. We have changed our policy of changing shoes in between lessons as this activity was taking up a phenomenal amount of teaching and learning time. . Wiping feet is an essential skill to have! Indoor shoes are still required in terms of P.E. and very wet and dirty weather conditions.

SMS CONTACT DETAILS
Often in the school day we need to contact parents, to cancel clubs etc.
Our SMS text messaging service to inform you of any changes in the school day has proven to be very popular. To enable this facility to run efficiently we need CURRENT mobile contact numbers. Please ensure your child’s data contacts are current. Thank you for your support.
BOOK FAIR
Thank you for your support at the Book fair held during the last week of term. We gained a commission of over £186 which has been used to buy sets of books for KS2 classes.

INDUCTION LOOP
We have an induction loop available on request from the main office for our hearing impaired visitors.

Thank you for all your positive feedback on the Christmas Productions. It is lovely to be appreciated and have all our hard work recognised. We are glad you enjoyed all the children's talents.
Please join us at St Mary's Church on Wednesday at 10am for our Carol Service. The children will be telling the Christmas story through singing, readings, acting and playing their musical instruments.
Party Day will take place on Thursday so the children do not have to wear their uniforms. If we have been really good Father Christmas may even pay us a visit.
All at Greenfield's wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2009.

Friday 14th November is Children in Need day at Greenfield's!
Class One are busy this week organising the fund raising events for the day. They have invited all the school to come dressed in their pyjamas for charge of 50p. The children will also need some pennies for the be name the teddy competition (20p), put your pennies on Pudsey collection and selling iced buns at playtime (10p).
Please help us break our record of £200! Thank you
This is a reminder that as from Monday 10th November access to Greenfield's will be through the main gate only.
As many of our families do live in the local area we would encourage parents to take the healthy and environmental friendly option of walking their children to school. If you do travel to school by car please have consideration for the residents of Ebor Mount and surrounding roads when dropping off and picking up children at Greenfield's.
Thank you.

Family Photographs

Make sure that hair is brushed and tidy, that toothpaste is removed from mouths, as it is Family Photo day on Thursday 9th October. Siblings will automatically have their photographs taken together, but if you have a younger sibling who doesn't attend school, there is an opportunity to have a photograph taken from 8.30 a.m. in the school hall. We were very pleased with the quality and style last year.
